Meta Is Set to Out-Earn Google in Ad Revenue for the First Time in 2026. The Money Behind It Is Mostly Video, Not Search.

Meta is on pace to out-earn Google in global ad revenue for the first time in 2026. eMarketer’s 2026 forecast, reported by MediaPost, has Meta bringing in 243.46 billion dollars in net worldwide ad revenue against Google’s 239.54 billion, putting Meta at 26.8 percent of global ad spend versus Google’s 26.4 percent. That is a reversal from 2025, when Google still led, 214.06 billion to Meta’s 196.17 billion. Meta’s growth rate is also accelerating, up to 24.1 percent this year from 22.1 percent last year, while Google’s holds at a steadier 11.9 percent.

That swing is happening inside a total ad market that is still getting bigger, not smaller. Statista projects worldwide advertising spending will reach 1.25 trillion dollars in 2026, with the United States alone accounting for roughly 500.98 billion of that, in figures compiled by Webandcrafts. Set against that backdrop, Meta overtaking Google is not two companies splitting a shrinking pool. It is one company growing faster inside a pool that is already expanding. A rotation inside a shrinking market usually reverses once the cycle turns. A rotation inside a market this size, still adding tens of billions of dollars a year, tends to compound instead, because the winner’s edge gets applied to a bigger number every quarter.

Analysts tie the swing to Reels and AI ad automation, not to Google losing search. Commentary accompanying the MediaPost figures credits Meta’s Advantage+ automation and AI generated ad creative for the jump, and calls out Reels specifically as “a major beneficiary” of that stack. Google is not losing the search battle it has run for two decades. It is losing share of a different contest, the one for where advertisers now believe attention and buying intent actually live, and that contest is being fought inside video feeds, not search results pages. Meta is not winning by selling more of the banner and feed inventory it sold five years ago. It is winning because short form video gives its ad system more viewing signal to predict what a person will buy, and more inventory to put that prediction in front of them.

Dedicated short form video ad budgets are catching up to that shift, just slower than the viewing habit did. Statista data cited by Zelios Agency puts short form video ad spending at 111.01 billion dollars in 2025, on a path to 219.71 billion dollars by 2030, a 13.68 percent compound annual growth rate. That is real money moving fast, and it is still a small fraction of what Meta alone now earns in a single year. That gap is what a lot of brands are quietly trying to close by shifting creative budget and headcount toward vertical video before next year’s spreadsheet is forced to admit the platform order already changed underneath it.

The practical read for a marketing lead: before locking in next year’s channel split, check whether it still assumes Google is the safer default buy and Meta is the secondary one. The revenue numbers no longer support that assumption, even on teams where the habit of writing the budget that way has not caught up yet.
