Demandbase Says More ABM Touches Win More Deals. Buyer Research Says the Decision Came First.

The Demandbase 2026 State of ABM benchmark report, built from 1,452 customer tenants and 429,634 advertising campaigns running on its platform, found that accounts targeted with four advertising products close at a 58.7 percent win rate, a 71 percent lift over accounts that got none. Track three or four buying-group roles on an account instead of one, and win rates climb another 48.5 percent. Connect CRM, marketing automation, and predictive scoring, and the median rate at which accounts convert from marketing-qualified to pipeline rises to 22.33 percent, against 14.19 percent for teams running a less integrated setup. The lesson the vendor wants marketers to take is obvious: more ABM activity wins more deals.

Buyer-side research tells a less flattering version of the same story. Wynter and Omniscient tracked 100 real B2B buying decisions and found that 92 percent of buyers never left the shortlist they built at the very start of the process, and 61 percent had already settled on a preferred vendor before formal evaluation even began, according to reporting by 1827 Marketing. If most deals are substantially decided before a prospect shows up in a CRM as in evaluation, a program that fires four ad products at an account that was always going to buy will produce exactly the win-rate numbers Demandbase published, whether or not any of that activity changed the outcome.

This is a correlation problem wearing a new dashboard. The Demandbase benchmark is first-party platform data. It shows what happened on accounts its own customers already chose to fund heavily, not what would have happened without that funding. Sales and marketing teams tend to direct budget toward accounts that already look likely to close, for reasons that have nothing to do with how many ad products run against them. A benchmark built that way will reliably show heavy-touch accounts outperforming light-touch ones, regardless of what the touches actually contributed to the outcome.

The industry is making the same admission in a different metric. Demand Gen Report 2026 Demand Generation Benchmark Survey, in the field since July, is built around what the publication calls a lead quality reset: marketing teams trading raw MQL counts for pipeline created, opportunity conversion, and win rate, because volume metrics never correlated cleanly with revenue either. A win-rate lift tied to ad spend is not a different kind of number than an MQL count tied to nothing much. It is the same gap between activity and proof, with better production values.

None of this argues for cutting ABM budgets. It argues for a harder question before the next renewal: what happened on comparable accounts that got the same budget, and comparable ones that did not. Until ABM platforms report that comparison instead of a before-and-after on accounts their own customers chose to fund, a 71 percent lift describes where the budget went. It does not prove what the budget did. The two reports are not in conflict so much as measuring different things: one counts dollars against outcomes, the other counts when the outcome was actually set.
