Organic Reach Is Collapsing on Every Platform Except TikTok. Most Media Budgets Still Treat Them the Same.

Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn are all losing organic reach at the same time. Instagram’s average reach rate fell to 3.20 percent by August 2026, a 14 percent year over year decline, based on Socialinsider’s analysis of more than 872,000 posts. Facebook sits even lower, at roughly 1.25 percent. Hootsuite’s 2026 social trends analysis puts LinkedIn company pages down 34 percent since 2024, and argues that paid media now belongs in every social plan as a fixed line item, not an occasional boost, because almost nothing else still reaches an audience reliably.

TikTok looks like the exception, but the data inside TikTok tells two different stories. Socialinsider’s 2026 benchmarks, drawn from more than 2 million posts, show the platform’s overall engagement rate by views climbing from 3.85 percent in 2024 to 4.20 percent in 2025, a 9 percent increase, before slipping back to 3.90 percent in the third quarter of 2026. Shares are up 13 percent year over year. But views for accounts with 1,000 to 5,000 followers dropped 23 percent, while accounts with 100,000 to 1 million followers saw average views per post rise from 25,198 to 34,900, and shares jump 44 percent. TikTok’s growth is not lifting every account. It is concentrating in the accounts that were already large.

That concentration matters because TikTok is also where social activity converts to revenue fastest. eMarketer projects TikTok Shop will generate 23.41 billion dollars in US ecommerce sales in 2026, up 48 percent from the prior year, enough to put it ahead of the US ecommerce businesses of Target, Costco, Best Buy, and Kroger. eMarketer expects TikTok Shop’s share of US social commerce to rise from 18.2 percent to 24.1 percent by 2027. For brands with the audience size to benefit, organic growth and commerce growth are now reinforcing each other on one platform.

Most social teams have not adjusted their budgets or their expectations to match that split. A content calendar built to post the same volume across four or five platforms treats a channel that is structurally dying, like LinkedIn company pages or Facebook, the same as one where the ceiling is still rising for large accounts. The number missing from most of these benchmark reports is the one that matters most to a mid-size brand page: the TikTok growth is real, but it is not evenly distributed, and a small account reading the headline stat about rising engagement is not the account living it.

The practical read for a social media manager: before renewing a flat budget split across platforms next quarter, pull reach and engagement by account size, not just by platform. The gap between what the aggregate numbers say and what a specific page is actually getting is where most of this year’s wasted spend is hiding.
