How to Perform Your Own ASO Audit

Running an ASO audit means checking every part of your app store listing against what is actually working today, not what worked two algorithm updates ago. This guide walks you through a full audit you can run yourself, from metadata to the AI-driven search signals shaping app discovery in 2026.

What an ASO Audit Actually Checks

An ASO audit is a structured review of everything that affects how your app ranks and converts inside the App Store and Google Play. That includes your title, subtitle, keywords, screenshots, ratings, category, and increasingly, how consistently your app is described across the web.

Most teams only look at their audit when downloads drop. A better approach is to schedule one every quarter, since app store algorithms change often enough that a listing optimized six months ago may already be leaving downloads on the table. Apple and Google both publish App Store search guidelines worth checking against before you start, since ranking factors shift with every major platform update.

Treat the audit as a diagnostic, not a redesign. You are looking for specific, fixable gaps, not starting from a blank page.

Start With Your Metadata and Keywords

Metadata is still where most ranking opportunities hide, so this is where an audit should begin.

  • Check your character usage. iOS gives you 30 characters for the title and subtitle combined with the app name, while Android allows up to 50 for the title and 80 for the short description. Unused characters are wasted keyword real estate.
  • Look for keyword repeats. A keyword used twice in your metadata is not working twice as hard. Replace the duplicate with a new term you are not yet ranking for.
  • Cut filler words. Terms like “app,” “the,” and “with” cost character space without adding search value.
  • Compare phrases, not just single words. A phrase like “budget tracker app” often converts better than the standalone word “budget,” because it matches how people actually search.

Once the text is tightened, check the keyword indexing itself. Confirm the terms you are targeting are actually indexed in each store, and flag any high-volume terms your competitors rank for that you do not.

Review Your Visual Assets

Screenshots, app previews, and icons do the conversion work that metadata cannot. A visitor who lands on your listing decides whether to download in seconds, and the visuals carry most of that decision.

During the audit, check whether your first three screenshots communicate the app’s core value without requiring the viewer to read dense captions. Compare your icon and screenshot style against category leaders and note whether yours still looks current. App store design trends move fast, and a listing that looked sharp eighteen months ago can look dated fast next to newer competitors.

If your app runs on Google Play, cross-check your listing against Google Play’s store listing experiments tool. It lets you A/B test icons, screenshots, and descriptions for free, and an audit is the right time to flag which elements have never actually been tested.

Check Ratings, Reviews, and Technical Health

Ratings influence ranking directly on both platforms, so they belong in every audit.

Pull your average rating and recent review volume, then read through the last 30 to 50 reviews for recurring complaints. A pattern in the negative reviews, such as confusion about pricing or a recurring bug, often points to a metadata fix or a product fix that would move your score. Apps sitting above four stars typically see a visibility boost, so even a small, sustained improvement is worth chasing.

Technical health matters just as much as the score itself:

  • Confirm your crash rate is stable, since both stores treat instability as a quality signal.
  • Check that your app complies with the current review guidelines, since a policy violation can quietly suppress a listing without an outright rejection.
  • Verify your category is still the strongest fit. A less competitive but still relevant category can lift visibility more than another round of metadata tweaks.

Build Content Search Engines Can Cite

App store search is no longer the only place your app gets discovered. People increasingly ask AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity for app recommendations, and those answers draw on how consistently your app is described across the web, not just your store listing.

This is where ASO and answer engine optimization, or AEO, start to overlap. An audit should check whether your app’s description, category, and core features are described the same way on your website, your press mentions, and your app store listing. Conflicting descriptions across sources make AI systems less confident about recommending you, even when every individual mention is technically accurate.

A few checks worth adding to your audit:

  • Search your app’s name alongside a core use case and see what AI assistants say about it.
  • Confirm your website and app store description use matching, specific language rather than vague marketing copy.
  • Add FAQPage structured data to any page that answers common questions about your app, since this format is one of the more citable structures for AI-generated answers.

Consistency across sources compounds over time, so this is not a one-time fix. Treat it as an ongoing part of your audit cadence, alongside metadata and visuals.

Turn Audit Findings Into a Testing Plan

An audit is only useful if it produces a prioritized list of changes, not a folder of notes nobody acts on.

Rank what you found by expected impact and effort. Metadata fixes are usually fast and low risk, so tackle those first. Visual and category changes take longer to test but often move the needle more, so schedule those next. Save deeper investigations, like a full localization overhaul, for when you have bandwidth for a proper test cycle.

Whatever you fix, test one variable at a time. Changing your title, icon, and screenshots simultaneously might improve conversion, but you will not know which change actually caused it, which makes your next audit harder to plan.

The Bottom Line

A useful ASO audit is really just a habit of checking the same things on a schedule, not a one-time deep dive. Start with metadata and keywords, since that is where the fastest wins usually hide. Then move to visuals, ratings, and technical health, and finish by checking that your app is described the same way everywhere it shows up online, since that consistency now shapes how AI assistants recommend apps too. Whatever you find, prioritize fixes by impact and effort, test one change at a time, and put the next audit on the calendar before you close this one out. Do that every quarter, and your listing stays ahead of the algorithm instead of catching up to it.

FAQs

How often should I run an ASO audit?

Run a full audit at least once a quarter, and a lighter metadata and ratings check monthly. Store algorithms and competitor listings shift often enough that a quarterly cadence catches most issues before they cost meaningful downloads.

What is the difference between an ASO audit and ASO strategy?

An audit is a diagnostic review of your current listing against what is working now. A strategy is the ongoing plan built from those findings, including which keywords to target and how often to retest. You need the audit first to build a strategy that is grounded in real gaps.

Can I run an ASO audit without paid tools?

Yes. App Store Connect and Google Play Console both provide keyword, ranking, and experiment data for free. Paid tools speed up competitor research and keyword volume estimates, but a solid audit is possible with the built-in platform tools alone.

Does ASO affect how AI assistants recommend apps?

Yes, indirectly. AI assistants pull from your app store listing, your website, and third-party mentions when answering app-related questions. Keeping your description and core features consistent across all of those sources makes your app easier for AI systems to cite with confidence.

When should I hire an ASO agency instead of auditing myself?

Consider outside help once you are managing multiple markets, a large keyword set, or a paid budget where small conversion gains have a real dollar impact. If a focused audit has not moved your numbers after a full cycle, a specialist can usually diagnose what a self-audit misses.
