Event Budgets Keep Climbing in 2026. The CRM Still Can’t See What They Bought.

Event marketing budgets are not shrinking heading into 2026. Forty percent of event organizers expect their budgets to grow this year, another 40 percent expect them to hold flat, and only 20 percent expect cuts, according to Bizzabo’s 2026 State of Events Benchmark Report. In a separate survey of more than 120 B2B marketing and events leaders, Vendelux found that most organizations still treat events as core to the pipeline, not as the first line item cut when budgets tighten, and that in-person programs are expected to carry even more of the pipeline load this year than last.

The confidence does not carry over to measurement. In that same Vendelux survey, titled Events Are in the Hot Seat, 86 percent of teams said they cannot accurately attribute revenue back to events, and 90 percent said events influence deals that their own CRM never credits to the channel. Only 22 percent said event impact is fully visible to revenue leaders. Seventy percent named a lack of visibility into attendee lists, before the event even opens, as their top barrier to booking meetings in the first place, which means the measurement problem starts well before the show floor opens, not after it closes.

The usual explanation for that gap does not hold up. For years the trade show industry has repeated a claim that up to 80 percent of leads collected at a booth are never followed up by sales, which puts the blame on reps letting badge scans go cold. The Center for Exhibition Industry Research, the industry’s own research body, has said it hears that figure quoted constantly and has never traced it to a study it or anyone else actually ran. A number with no traceable origin cannot be the real explanation for a measurement gap that current survey data confirms exists for entirely different, better documented reasons.

What the 2026 data points to instead is a plumbing problem, not a people problem. Only 13 percent of teams call their event selection process fully data-driven, per Vendelux, and 55 percent do not start pre-event outreach until less than four weeks out, short of the 8 to 12 week cadence longer-running programs use. A contact that lands in a spreadsheet instead of a CRM field, or gets scanned under a different email address than the one sales already has on file, will not surface in a pipeline report later, no matter how quickly a rep calls it. The lead was never missing. The system just never recorded it as one.

None of this makes the case for cutting event budgets. Marketers are not wrong to keep funding events; in-person contact still moves buyers, and the 2026 budget numbers reflect that confidence. But spending more on a channel while the systems meant to measure it stay disconnected changes the argument from whether events work to whether anyone can prove it, and that second argument is much harder to win in the next budget review.
