Event spending is going up. One 2026 survey summary reports that 86 percent of B2B marketers plan to increase event budgets this year. Another finding sits awkwardly beside it: only 21 percent say they can measure event ROI with confidence.
The measurement problem is easing, slowly. The share of organizers reporting difficulty proving event ROI fell from 70 percent in 2025 to 40 percent in 2026. That is progress, but 40 percent is still a large group spending real money on something they cannot defend. Lead generation remains the top metric, while the share of marketers citing direct sales as an event metric dropped from 61 percent to 25 percent, which suggests teams are measuring relationship outcomes more than closed deals.
Smaller formats are winning on quality. One comparison in event-marketing coverage sets a $150,000 trade show booth, producing 200 to 300 badge scans and 10 to 15 qualified conversations, against the same money spent on ten executive dinners, producing 150 qualified attendees and a 60 to 70 percent follow-up meeting rate. Treat that as an illustrative scenario from an interested source, not a controlled study. The direction still matches a broader move toward curated, smaller formats.
Trade shows still show strong returns on paper. Exhibitors often report 4:1 ROI or better, and CEIR benchmarks cited this year put returns near $20.98 per dollar spent. These averages blend very different programs, and a marketer who cannot attribute pipeline to a specific show cannot tell whether their own booth sits above or below the average.
What to fix first. Before adding event budget, decide which outcome each event is meant to produce (meetings with named accounts, pipeline influenced, existing customers retained) and capture it at the event. A badge scan counts attendance. A booked follow-up meeting counts progress. Programs that record the second can answer the ROI question. Programs that record only the first usually cannot.
