The Scoop: Larian CEO takes defensive approach in response to backlash over AI-use

Larian Studios, the developer behind Baldur’s Gate 3, found itself in hot water after comments about generative AI sparked backlash from fans and creators.

The controversy started after CEO Swen Vincke spoke in an interview about how the studio has experimented with AI tools during development of its next Divinity game. His remarks were interpreted by some fans as Larian embracing AI in ways that could affect creative jobs or end up in the final game.

The criticism was swift. Players called out the studio online, accusing it of undermining human creativity and betraying the values that helped make Baldur’s Gate 3 so popular.

In response, Vincke issued clarifications through social posts and a statement shared with IGN.

“We are neither releasing a game with any AI components nor are we looking at trimming down teams to replace them with AI,” Vincke said. He added that Larian still employs large teams of writers and artists and continues to hire, stressing that AI is being explored only as a behind-the-scenes productivity tool, not a creative replacement.

After skepticism over his response grew, Vincke then took a more defensive approach on X.

He wrote, “Holy f*** guys we’re not ‘pushing hard’ for or replacing concept artists with AI. We have a team of 72 artists of which 23 are concept artists and we are hiring more. The art they create is original and I’m very proud of what they do. I was asked explicitly about concept art and our use of Gen AI. I answered that we use it to explore things. I didn’t say we use it to develop concept art. The artists do that. And they are indeed world class artists.”

Why it matters: Although Vincke tried to calm the situation, the way the message landed created more problems than it solved.

The initial comments about AI were vague, especially the suggestion that Larian was leaning into the technology. Many people assumed this meant AI could replace human work, and that assumption fueled the backlash before any clarification was shared.

The response also struggled because of tone and timing. The follow-up came through social posts that included profanity and frustration. While that style may feel authentic to some fans, it can also come across as defensive or careless when the goal is to reassure a broad audience and lower tensions.

Finally, there’s a gap between what Larian says is happening and how people perceive it. For a studio known for valuing human creativity, even limited behind-the-scenes AI use can feel to some like a step in the wrong direction.

The idea that AI touches any part of the creative process is still a dealbreaker for some. That makes rebuilding trust harder, even after multiple explanations.

  • Los Angeles Rams star wide receiver Puka Nacua apologized publicly after a livestream appearance where he mimicked a gesture that many people recognized as an antisemitic stereotype. The moment happened during a stream with internet personalities, where a hand gesture that has been used to wrongly stereotype Jewish people was suggested as a touchdown celebration. Several critics, including public figures, called for accountability after the incident gained attention online, WSJ reports. Nacua said he didn’t know the gesture carried that offensive meaning at the time and posted an apology on social media, saying had no idea the act was “antisemitic in nature and perpetuated harmful stereotypes against Jewish people” and that he deeply apologizes to anyone who was offended. The NFL and the Rams also released statements condemning discrimination and antisemitism, stressing that such behavior has no place in sports or society. The NFL wrote that the organization “strongly condemns all forms of discrimination and derogatory behavior directed toward any group or individual,” and that the “continuing rise of antisemitism must be addressed across the world,” while emphasizing “hatred has no place in our sport or society.” This situation is a reminder that public figures are always being watched, and what they do or say online can quickly turn into a widespread news story. In this case, a casual moment on a livestream turned into a controversy because it touched on sensitive cultural issues, showing how important it is to understand context before engaging in or promoting a behavior. When someone makes a mistake,  a prompt and sincere communication, as Nacua attempted with his apology, can help manage reputational damage. But it also matters how that apology is framed, whether it acknowledges the harm and how the broader organization, the NFL, plans to reinforce values and expectations.
  • UnitedHealth Group announced a plan to rebuild trust and improve its business practices after an independent audit was conducted. The organization shared the results of that audit which included “23 action plans,” CNBC reports. The company says it plans to complete about 65% of those actions by the end of 2025, and finish all of them by around March 2026. These plans are meant to improve how UnitedHealth operates and tracks processes. The audit and action plan come as the organization continues to face scrutiny, including ongoing Justice Department investigations into its Medicare billing practices. “We hope that you see these assessments as a commitment to setting a new standard of transparency for the health care marketplace, as we believe that you and every person who engages with our health system deserves to understand how we go about our work,” CEO Steve Hemsley said in a letter Friday. “We know that our actions and decisions have significant impacts on patients, care providers and the broader health system, and we are determined to hold ourselves to the highest standard.” The company’s message combines honesty with confidence. It acknowledges external reviews and cooperation with investigations. By being transparent about steps taken and plans ahead, UnitedHealth is signaling that it values accountability and improvement, which strengthens credibility during a challenging regulatory moment.
