The Changing Role of Digital PR in AI Search Landscape

The way people find and evaluate businesses online is changing. Traditional search engines remain an important part of the research process, but they are no longer the only source people use when looking for information, expertise or professional services.

AI-led search experiences, including Google AI Overviews and large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, have introduced another layer to online discovery. For businesses, this means digital visibility increasingly extends beyond achieving prominent positions in traditional search results.

This change has particular implications for professional and regulated industries. Businesses operating in sectors such as finance, legal and healthcare need to build online authority while maintaining the accuracy, trust and compliance their industries demand.

As search evolves, digital PR has an opportunity to evolve with it.

Moving Beyond Activity-Based PR

One of the longstanding challenges with traditional PR is uncertainty. Retainer-based models can involve ongoing activity without providing businesses with certainty around when or where coverage will appear.

For organisations that require predictable communications and clearer outcomes, this can create a disconnect between PR activity and the visibility the business is ultimately trying to achieve.

A placement-led approach offers an alternative. Instead of measuring success primarily through the amount of PR activity taking place, greater emphasis can be placed on securing publication and building a presence across relevant news titles.

This approach is particularly relevant for businesses that need greater certainty around campaign timelines. Fixed pricing, defined delivery periods and publication-led services can make digital PR easier to incorporate into a wider marketing strategy.

It represents a shift from focusing on what a PR campaign is doing to considering what visibility it is actually creating.

Why Regulated Industries Require a Different Approach

Digital PR is not identical across every industry.

Professional and regulated sectors frequently deal with complex subjects where accuracy and appropriate language are particularly important. Communications may need to account for regulatory nuances while remaining accessible to a wider audience.

This makes human editorial expertise an important part of the process.

Automation can support modern marketing activity, but automated tools alone may not provide the level of judgement required when communicating complex industry topics. Human review can help ensure content remains appropriate while still serving its wider visibility objectives.

For regulated businesses, effective digital PR isn’t just about securing visibility. Communications also need to take account of the regulatory requirements that apply to the business and the markets in which it operates.

Understanding the AI Visibility Gap

The rise of AI-led discovery introduces another consideration: whether businesses are visible when people use AI platforms to research a topic, company or service.

A business can have an established website and traditional search presence while still needing to strengthen its wider online authority. This creates what can be described as an AI visibility gap.

Digital PR services can contribute to addressing this by building third-party coverage beyond a company’s own website. Rather than relying entirely on information published by the business itself, a wider digital footprint can include coverage across news publications and other online sources.

The objective is not simply to optimise content for one search engine or AI platform. Instead, businesses can consider how their information exists across the broader online environment.

Approaches combining human-readable journalism with machine-readable data structures are becoming increasingly relevant. Content still needs to provide value to the person reading it, while the way information is structured can also support visibility within an evolving search ecosystem.

Journalism Remains Important in an AI-Led Environment

The growth of AI does not remove the need for quality editorial content. Businesses still need information that is clear, credible and written for human audiences.

For professional services, this is particularly important because trust plays an important role in establishing authority.

Digital PR therefore has to serve two connected purposes. It needs to produce editorial content that communicates effectively with people while also considering the increasingly complex ways information is discovered online.

This does not mean writing primarily for machines. Instead, it means recognising that online content now exists within an environment shaped by traditional search engines, AI-led search features and LLM-based research tools.

A modern PR strategy needs to account for that broader landscape without sacrificing editorial quality.

Bringing Greater Certainty to Digital PR

Predictability is another area where digital PR models are developing.

Placement-led services can give businesses clearer expectations around publication, costs and delivery timelines. For example, Fleet Street News offers fixed pricing and a publication-led digital PR model for professional and regulated sectors, with core campaigns carrying a five-working-day publication promise.

The wider principle is that businesses increasingly need to understand what they are receiving from their PR investment rather than relying solely on ongoing activity. This can also make PR easier to connect with other digital marketing disciplines.

Digital PR as Part of a Wider Visibility Strategy

Digital PR does not need to replace established channels such as SEO or PPC. Instead, it can complement them by helping businesses develop authority and third-party visibility beyond their own digital properties.

As online discovery evolves, businesses may need to think beyond rankings as their only measure of visibility. Search engines, AI-generated results and LLMs provide additional routes through which people can encounter information.

The fundamentals, however, remain familiar. Businesses still need authority, credibility and trust. What is changing is where those signals may need to exist and how people discover them.

For professional and regulated industries, the next stage of digital PR is therefore not simply about gaining more coverage. It is about creating credible, predictable visibility that can support businesses across traditional search and an increasingly AI-led discovery landscape.
