How to Create Unique Content for SEO and AI Search Visibility – TopRank® Marketing

Think of your best piece of content, then strip away anything that identifies it as yours and drop it onto a competitor’s site. Would anyone notice the difference? Would the point of view, the context, the way it’s put together still feel like it could only have come from you?

For most B2B content, the honest answer is no. Swap the header colors and half the blog archives in many industries become interchangeable. That’s what happens when content gets built around a list of common topics and not your company’s true expertise. It’s a relic of bygone SEO practices that can now be actively harmful to your visibility.

Google has said as much. Its guide to optimizing for generative AI search makes a distinction between commodity content, which is common knowledge that could have originated from anyone, and non-commodity content, which offers expert or experienced insights that go beyond the ordinary. Borrowing from Google’s own example, consider the difference between a post titled, “7 Tips for First-Time Homebuyers” vs. a post titled, “Why We Waived the Inspection & Saved Money: A Look Inside the Sewer Line.” The first could have been written by anyone and the second could only have been written by someone who lived it.

What makes content uniquely yours

Differentiating your voice requires being more deliberate about a few things most content programs skip:

  • Real stories about real people. Insights shared by customers and employees, and about projects are entirely unique to your brand.
  • Holding an actual position. Brands that commit to a point of view and positioning that demonstrate real leadership in their industry.
  • Well-structured storytelling that feels authentic. Readers (and AI) trust writing that reads like a person sitting down and explaining concepts rather than drafting-by-committee.
  • Original or proprietary data. Insights from research or data only your brand has are unique to your business and specifically relevant to your audience.

Answer Engine B2B Thought Leadership
The research backs this up. In Answer Engine: The State of B2B Thought Leadership in 2026, our study of 797 senior B2B marketers with research partner Ascend2, 93% of marketers using original research-based content say it is effective at driving engagement and leads, and 48% say it is very effective.

This is the Trust System pillar of Best Answer Marketing in practice. Credibility signals like original research, influential practitioners, customer advocacy, and earned media are what tell buyers and AI systems that your expertise is recognized beyond your own website.

A good example is when Sprinklr wanted to reach smaller enterprise social media teams with a new solution, the answer was not another round of category explainer videos. TopRank Marketing helped build Socialverse, a documentary-style masterclass featuring Jay Baer, Ann Handley, Mari Smith, and Paul Roetzer alongside internal Sprinklr experts and customers. That combination of influential external voices and firsthand internal expertise is not something a competitor can replicate by publishing about the same topic.

If you want your audience to trust your brand, you need to be willing to sound like you, even when “safe” is easier.

Are you competing with your own content?

Most B2B brands have been publishing for years, sometimes decades. That volume creates a problem: your own content starts competing with itself.

B2B trends have a way of cycling back around every few years. If you cover them each time (as you should) you can end up with a dozen posts on the same topic.

Consequently, those posts are all fighting for the same keywords, in addition to being up against every other business writing about the same thing. No single post can rise to the top when it’s splitting authority with your own content catalog.

Signs your content is cannibalizing itself

A few things worth watching for:

  • Multiple posts targeting the same keyword or search intent. If three articles could all reasonably answer the same query, answer engines have to guess which one you actually want ranked.
  • Declining rankings on older content with no clear cause. Sometimes a post doesn’t lose to a competitor. It loses to something newer on your own site.
  • Posts that were never going to earn traffic on their own. Content written to check a topic off a list – rather than to say something worth saying – rarely ranks, and risks diluting the posts around it.

How to audit for overlap

A content audit doesn’t need to be complicated, but it does need to be intentional:

  • Identify thin or repetitive content. Pull everything targeting a given topic and look at it side by side. If two posts are answering the same question, one of them is unnecessary.
  • Decide what gets refreshed and what gets redirected. Strong ideas with weak execution are worth rewriting. Redundant posts are better folded into your strongest existing page than left to compete with it.
  • Look for the gap your content hasn’t covered yet. An audit isn’t just for cleanup. It’s often the fastest way to find what you haven’t said yet.

The payoff for doing this well is measurable and significant. StackAdapt came to TopRank Marketing with content gaps, under-optimized pages, and technical barriers that were holding back their organic visibility. After a deep audit of keyword trends, competitor content, and technical performance, the team rebuilt the content strategy around what buyers were actually searching for. Within six months, page-one keyword rankings rose 91%, the share of relevant organic traffic doubled, and new visitors converted at 4.5 times the previous rate.

Audits also feed the Data Informed pillar of Best Answer Marketing. Knowing which questions your buyers are asking, and which of those questions you have answered poorly or repeatedly, is the input that makes the next round of content worth publishing.

Why (and how) unique content stands out from AI slop

AI tools make it faster than ever to produce content that’s accurate, organized, and keyword-aligned. That was enough to compete for a moment, but it has quickly became the default output of every tool being used the same way.

Why so much AI content sounds the same

Follow me into this analogy for a moment: ordering pizza with a big enough group often devolves into tough negotiations. Half the table wants meat lovers, someone else wants plain cheese, one holdout insists on Hawaiian. Pepperoni wasn’t anyone’s first choice, but it’s the option nobody hated enough to veto.

AI-generated content is the pepperoni pizza of the content world: it sweeps inputs from a broad range of sources and produces phrasing, stance and examples that both offend and excite no one.

Google has talked about the same problem another way. Their best practices ask publishers to create content themselves based on what they know, and to consider what in-depth experience they can bring to a topic, instead of recycling what others have already said or what a generative AI model could easily produce on its own. In that context, pepperoni is what an AI model produces on its own.

The ouroboros of boring
And this problem is getting worse. Models trained on the internet are increasingly trained on content other models already wrote, drifting each generation harder toward the statistical middle. Average enough opinions together, and what’s left is a distinctly indistinct voice.

The prompts library problem
The prompt libraries everyone’s using don’t help, either. If you’re using the same prompts, same structure, and same instructions as everyone else, your output is optimized to be exactly the same as everyone else’s.

The fix, however, isn’t avoiding AI. It’s making sure what you feed it isn’t already the average.

B2B Marketers are recognizing this in a meaningful way. In our Answer Engine research, 35% of B2B marketing leaders say original research is significantly more valuable than AI-generated content for building trust and authority, and another 32% say it is more impactful overall.

What should be human-led (and what to leave to AI)

If AI drafting defaults toward the average, standing apart means being deliberate about which parts of the work stay human.

Human-led Leave to AI
A defensible point of view Ideation assistance
Real customer, employee, or project details Structural organization and outlines
Judgment on what the story actually is Grammar and mechanical polish
Knowing when a draft has drifted off voice Summarizing or condensing existing material
The specific experience only you have lived Repetitive or templated sections (metadata, alt text)

Here is what that looks like in practice. An AI tool might suggest: “Influencer marketing can help B2B brands expand their reach and build credibility with new audiences.” This is accurate, organized, and also completely interchangeable. The human-led version would name the brand, the four influencers, the format, and the audience it was built to reach, which is the Sprinklr paragraph earlier in this post. It’s the same claim, but only one of them could have come from TopRank Marketing.

The bottom line: AI is good at supporting execution once direction exists. It isn’t a substitute for the direction itself. Another way to think about it: humans for imagination, AI for optimization.

Judgment like this isn’t something a tool can generate on request – it’s built through years of knowing what a story needs and what it doesn’t. It’s exactly the kind of experience an agency writer brings to the table: the expertise and knowledge to produce polished, unique work.

Structure the work so it can be found and cited

Distinctive thinking still needs to be discoverable. The Experiential Content pillar of our Best Answer Marketing framework covers both halves of that: orchestrating answer topics across formats including video, audio, image, text, and interactive, and at the same time structuring on-site content and off-site mentions so AI systems can find and choose them as the answer.

Google reinforces the format half of this BAM best practice by encouraging publishers to support text with high-quality, relevant images and video, since its generative AI features can bring those in as well. The Socialverse example worked partly because it was a documentary series rather than another blog post. The insight was original and the format made it visible and engaging.

Quality is the new quantity

Every advantage in this piece comes down to the same thing: someone with a real perspective, an instinct for how a story should flow, and the judgment to direct tools instead of just using them. That’s what makes content impossible to swap onto a competitor’s site. It’s also what keeps your content from competing against itself.

And it’s the one input no model can generate on its own, no matter how good the prompt is.
