How to Best Work with a B2B Influencer and Creator Marketing Agency – TopRank® Marketing

According to our new 2026 B2B Influencer and Creator Marketing report, 86% of B2B brands surveyed are either beginning or mature in their implementation of influencer marketing programs and 14% are planning to start in the next 12 months. That’s 100% of B2B companies on board with influence.

While more B2B brands are in the influence game, only 46% rate their programs as very effective. Top challenges B2B brands experience with their influencer programs include finding the right creators (41%), measuring results (37%) and managing influencer relationships (33%). These are all things many B2B brands turn to agencies for.

One of the challenges is perspective. Many B2B companies think of influence and creator engagement through a B2C lens. It’s true, lines are blurring, but B2B influencer marketing is still a different animal from its B2C counterpart. Whereas high follower counts and virality potential are calling cards for successful consumer-facing campaigns, there’s greater nuance at play when getting down to engaging with business buyers.

B2B influencers are most often subject matter experts, practitioners with a proven track record, and consultants with a genuine pulse on a specific industry. Increasingly, they’re also content creators — professionals who’ve built engaged audiences around niche topics your buyers care about.

Finding and engaging these B2B creators is a different discipline than consumer influencer marketing. It’s special mix of transaction and relationship building. To build it well requires strategy, experience and time.

That complexity is exactly why more B2B brands are bringing in outside help. According to new data from our 2026 B2B Influencer and Creator Marketing Report (launching in August 2026), a significant number of B2B brands now have an active influencer marketing program, and many describe their approach as always-on (year-round engagement rather than one-off campaigns).

2026 B2B Influencer & Creator Marketing Report

As the field of B2B marketing matures, so do influencer and creator expectations. The most sought-after voices are increasingly selective about whom they partner with and how. In fact, one of the top challenges we hear from B2B brands looking for help is that when they tried contacting influencers and creators on their own, they could not get a response.

Working with a specialized B2B influencer marketing agency like TopRank with existing networks and relationships can accelerate what would otherwise take years to build. But the partnership works best when you come prepared.

Here are 6 tips on how to set yourself up for success when working with an influencer marketing partner.

Expand your definition of B2B influence and of “B2B influencer”

You’ve probably noticed: influencer marketing lingo is evolving. “Creators” is increasingly the preferred term for professionals who build audiences and content around specific domains, and the reframe is not a frivolous one. It’s a useful expansion of the category.

A creator might be an industry analyst with a popular newsletter, a practitioner who posts consistently on LinkedIn, a speaker with a loyal conference following, or a developer sharing expertise through GitHub and forums. None of them look like traditional influencers, but all of them can move your audience.

Our 2026 survey bears this out: when B2B marketers evaluate potential partners, trustworthiness and credibility rank first (46%), followed by audience relevance (40%) and subject matter expertise (31%). Audience size ranks fifth.

When an agency delivers an influencer or creator shortlist, be mentally prepared to evaluate it on relevance and resonance over reach. Think not about “How many followers does this person have?” but instead, “Does this person speak to our specific audience, and does that audience act on what they say?”

B2B marketers rank trustworthiness and credibility as the most important attribute for creator partners. Audience size ranks fifth.

Know your internal experts before the kickoff call

A company’s own employees, executives and subject matter experts are underutilized assets in most influencer programs. These internal authorities can co-create content alongside external voices, extend distribution to their own networks and lend internal credibility to the program as a whole.

The Best Answer Marketing framework identifies this as part of the Trust System: Build signals of credibility through the combination of original research, external influencer collaboration, and internal executive and employee voices. Each element reinforces the others.

Before your first agency meeting, identify a handful of internal people who are savvy with social platforms, are comfortable representing the brand publicly, and have a track record of being quotable and engaged. Bonus points if they’re already building a social following, but you’ve got to start somewhere. An adept agency will help these individuals sharpen their positioning while weaving their perspectives into the content.

Define your audience with more precision than you think you need

A clearly defined target audience is foundational to any influencer or creator program. In our experience, most briefs are too broad. “Senior marketing leaders” is a starting point. “Director-level demand gen marketers at mid-market SaaS companies navigating budget scrutiny and attribution gaps” is closer to where you want to end up.

Agencies can tap into audience research tools that yield valuable insights about what a particular cohort reads, where they go for information, and who they listen to. This information is powerful for guiding influencer selection and topical direction.

The more precisely you can define who you’re trying to reach — their role, their pain points, where they spend time, what they need to feel confident in a buying decision — the more targeted the creator selection and content strategy can be.

Set a realistic budget, including for compensation

Influencer and creator compensation has matured alongside the discipline. TopRank’s 2026 survey finds that over half of B2B organizations (51%) now pay creators a flat fee per deliverable, and 48% use performance-based models. Non-monetary arrangements — co-branding opportunities, product access, exclusive event invitations — remain meaningful, but they work best as complements to financial compensation, as opposed to replacements.

The most effective programs invest accordingly. Best-in-class strategies are significantly more likely to use credibility and reach-based compensation (47% vs. 30% of less effective programs) and performance-based pay (56% vs. 41%).

Come to your agency kickoff with a budget range in mind, separate from the agency’s service fees. That starting point allows your agency to advise on what’s achievable, while structuring fair deals and prioritizing the creator relationships most likely to move the needle.

Build a wish list (and a nix list)

Before your kickoff, document both sides of the creator selection equation.

Start with the known best fits for your program. Who do you admire? Which voices already resonate with your audience? What attributes make them a natural fit for your brand?

Then go a step further: define what you don’t want. This might include:

  • Creators who’ve worked closely with direct competitors
  • Topics or tones that conflict with your brand values
  • Audience profiles that don’t map to your buyer

Our survey found that identifying, qualifying and connecting with the right influencers is the top challenge in B2B influencer marketing, cited by 41% of practitioners. A detailed positive and negative list — what fits, what doesn’t — gives your agency an invaluable head start and reduces back-and-forth in the selection process.

Think about what you want B2B creators to help you achieve

Get specific about what success looks like before the program launches. B2B influencer and creator programs are delivering measurable results across a wider range of outcomes than many marketers expect, including areas that are becoming more strategic.

Beyond the familiar top-of-funnel gains (brand awareness and trust-building), leading programs are also contributing to LLM visibility and down-funnel outcomes. Programs that intertwine influencer activity with paid media amplification, AI search optimization and sales enablement consistently outperform those that keep influencer marketing in its own silo.

AI visibility is worth calling out specifically. At a time where more than nine out of 10 buyers say AI shapes their vendor shortlist, a full 86% of B2B marketers told us improving visibility in generative AI tools — platforms like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini — will be important to their influencer program in the coming year. It comes back to being the Best Answer: trusted, expert voices that influence human buyers are often the same ones being cited by AI systems.

Helping your agency partner understand which goals are most important will help ensure your efforts are optimized around those results.

The case for outside influencer marketing expertise is stronger than ever

B2B influencer and creator marketing has evolved from a series of casual collaborations into a specialized discipline that requires strategy, relationship infrastructure and measurement rigor to execute well. Our research shows that fully documented, always-on programs with dedicated budgets consistently outperform ad hoc efforts. The gap between best-in-class and average is widening, while the stakes are rising.

An experienced agency brings the network, the process and the institutional knowledge to get there faster. The best results come when clients arrive prepared and ready to hit the ground running.
