Experiential Trend of the Week: Commiseration Activations

Experiential Trend of the Week: Commiseration Activations

Diehard sports fans recognize that you can’t win ’em all, but that doesn’t make their team’s losses any less devastating—especially during tentpole tournaments like the FIFA World Cup and March Madness. And as of late, savvy brands have been quick to offer a shoulder to cry on with commiseration-themed activations designed to boost spirits (and engagement).

UBER

Perhaps one of the most talked-about experiential campaigns from the 2026 FIFA World Cup was Uber’s “Sorry for Your (Team’s) Loss” mobile activation that was part roving billboard, part stunt. With a wrapped bus that replicated a tissue box, the brand wheeled around nine cities, distributing tissue packs and ride discounts to defeated fans.

And in New York and New Jersey, a 10-by-10 Consolation Corner lifted fans’ spirits with tissue giveaways, promo codes and brand ambassador-led engagement.

TACO BELL

Also jumping into the fervor around this year’s World Cup was Taco Bell, which launched its L.O.C.O.S. (Loss Or Celebration Outcome Support) platform to perk up fans after a team loss (or to help them celebrate after a sweet victory), and the brand aims to leverage the initiative for future heartbreaking moments, from breakups to mental “meltdowns.”

During the tournament, the brand hit the streets in the U.S., UK, Australia, Canada, Brazil and Spain to console fans with exclusive merch and giveaways, and plenty of free tacos (in Spain, consumers could even get “emotional support” tacos delivered). In some markets, there were also interactive moments, including scream booths and swag in the form of mood rings that tracked emotional highs and lows, and subtler touchpoints, like lavender pumped into the air to reduce stress.

CHEWY

For many consumers, there’s nothing quite as comforting as snuggling a dog, something Chewy bet on when it launched its Cuddle Shuttle during the World Cup. A pack of therapy dogs was first unleashed in Miami to console fans via cuddle sessions aboard a branded vehicle. From central Miami, the activation rolled into Brickell, Wynwood, Sunrise and Miami Beach to bring smiles to more soccer fans.

CHISPA

Chispa, a dating app designed for U.S. Latinos, flipped the script on the grief that comes from watching your favorite team lose with its “Lucky Losers” World Cup campaign. The brand assembled singles at Dallas watch parties, and at the end of the matches, sent two heartbroken fans into the backseat of a custom-wrapped Alto car to get to know each other.

A Latino streamer rode shotgun as “wingman” to help spark conversation, and the two participants scored dinner on Chispa—if the ride went well. Across two live watch parties at Christie’s in Dallas, nine couples found a match, ultimately delivering them to a brand-hosted date at Leela’s Wine Bar.

REESE’S

For Reese’s, during this year’s March Madness, an “Every Bracket Busts for a Reese’s” fan program turned the inevitable heartbreak of watching your NCAA tournament bracket fall part into a chance to score something sweeter.

In addition to a social media-fueled campaign that gave consumers a chance to win Reese’s cups or tickets to the NCAA Men’s or Women’s Final Four and championship games, the brand hosted a one-day event at Hershey’s Chocolate World in Hershey, PA, and in its Times Square location in New York City.

The first 500 people in each locale who showed their busted bracket earned a free King Size Peanut Butter Cup and a coupon for 16% off Reese’s Stuff Your Cup, plus a chance to participate in a themed photo op and Reese’s character meet-and-greet.
