What Today’s Leaders Can Learn from Lincoln’s Legacy
By Barbara Rozgonyi | Future Business Keynote Speaker

Lincoln’s Leadership Lessons in a Digital World

“The best way to predict your future is to create it.” – Abraham Lincoln

Happy Birthday, Honest Abe! 🎉

In November 2006, I wrote my first blog post about Abraham Lincoln on WiredPRWorks, inspired by Tom Wheeler’s book Mr. Lincoln’s T-Mails. Back then, I was struck by how Lincoln used the telegraph to revolutionize communication, much like we use email, AI, and social media today. Nearly two decades later, Lincoln’s leadership, communication, and technological foresight remain just as relevant in a world driven by rapid digital transformation.

Lincoln’s Mastery of Communication and Technology

Abraham Lincoln wasn’t just a gifted speaker—he was a visionary communicator who understood the power of emerging technology. In 1860, over four million telegraph messages traveled nearly 50,000 miles, creating the first real-time information network. Lincoln used this new technology to strategize, connect, and lead in uncertain times—a model that mirrors today’s AI-powered, hyper-connected world.

Growing up in Danville, Illinois—just blocks from Lincoln’s law partner Ward Hill Lamon’s office—I developed a deep connection to Lincoln’s story. As a teenager, I volunteered at the Vermilion County Museum, where Lincoln once gave a speech from the balcony in his stocking feet. Imagine the crowd gathered below, hanging on to every word. His ability to captivate audiences, command attention, and harness technology for leadership shaped my own perspective on the power of connection and innovation.

Lincoln’s Leadership Playbook for 2025 and Beyond

Even in today’s AI-driven world, Lincoln’s approach to communication, strategy, and leadership offers timeless lessons for business executives, entrepreneurs, and keynote speakers. Here are four ways to apply his wisdom:

🚀 Leverage Technology to Lead – Lincoln embraced the telegraph as a tool for strategy and decision-making. Today’s leaders must harness AI, automation, and digital tools to stay ahead.

🎤 Master Storytelling – Lincoln’s speeches were simple, powerful, and unforgettable. Whether you’re delivering a keynote, leading a team, or branding a business, clear, compelling communication is key.

🌐 Build Strong Networks – Lincoln surrounded himself with a diverse, insightful team. Today’s leaders must cultivate meaningful relationships—both online and offline—to inspire collaboration and innovation.

🔄 Embrace Change with Resilience – Lincoln led during one of the most uncertain times in history. Successful leaders today need that same adaptability to navigate the rapid evolution of AI, technology, and business landscapes.

Bringing Lincoln’s Lessons into the Future

One of Lincoln’s greatest strengths was his ability to unify people through communication—a lesson every leader, marketer, and entrepreneur can take to heart. He understood that technology, when used wisely, could amplify a leader’s voice, expand influence, and drive transformation.

Lincoln was ahead of his time, pioneering the way leaders leverage technology to connect and communicate. Now, in 2025, it’s up to us to apply these same principles—only with tools like AI, social media, and digital PR at our fingertips.
