AI Running Shoes: Marketing & Discovery in 2026

AI Running Shoes: Marketing & Discovery in 2026

Running shoe discovery changes with workouts. A daily trainer, stability shoe, wide-fit model, and carbon-plated race shoe answer different questions. A runner might start their research with ChatGPT, read RunRepeat, watch a marathon review, inspect a Brooks or New Balance product page, and complete a Fleet Feet fitting before choosing.

5W’s 2026 running shoe study found that ASICS appeared in 82.9% of returned AI answers, while its owned domain appeared in only 1.7% of source citations. RunRepeat appeared in 70.3% of answers with retrieval evidence. The central problem is not whether a brand appears. The problem is whether the shortlist preserves the runner’s need and gives the next channel enough proof to support consideration.

Which runner question activates the full discovery network?

One prompt can expose every handoff: Which shoe can handle daily miles, support a stable stride, fit a wider forefoot, and still work for a first marathon?

That prompt mixes training, support, fit, and race use. Brooks Adrenaline GTS 24 may enter through stability language. New Balance Fresh Foam X 1080v14 may enter through daily and long-run use. ASICS GEL-KAYANO 32 may enter through stability coverage. Nike Vaporfly 4 may enter a race-day comparison but not the same daily-training set.

Runner experience

Determine whether the shoe works across repeated miles.

What did 5W’s running shoe study measure?

5W measured the study on August 27, 2026. Researchers tested 24 buyer-intent prompts three times across Perplexity, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. The engines returned 240 answers from 288 attempts, and 239 answers included retrieval evidence.

ASICS appeared in 82.9% of returned answers. New Balance reached 72.9%, Brooks and Nike each reached 71.7%, HOKA 70%, and Saucony 68.3%. The confidence intervals overlapped for many leaders. The study therefore measures visibility in the tested prompts, not product quality, demand, sales, or a permanent rank order.

Why does ASICS visibility not mean ASICS supplies the evidence?

ASICS led brand appearance at 82.9%, yet its owned-domain citation rate reached only 1.7%. New Balance recorded 0.4%, Brooks 8.8%, Nike 1.3%, HOKA 0%, and Saucony 0.4%. A brand can therefore appear in the answer while another source supports the description.

RunRepeat appeared in 70.3% of the 239 evidence-bearing answers. Fleet Feet reached 42.7%, Outside Magazine 41%, and Marathon Handbook 30.1%. Review sites, specialty retailers, and publishers help define which models fit a training goal.

Why do engines create different running shoe shortlists?

Answer engines retrieved different brands and sources from the same study design. ASICS appeared in 95.1% of Perplexity answers and 68.3% of Gemini answers. On appeared in 74.6% of ChatGPT answers and 3.3% of Claude answers.

Those spreads do not prove that one engine performs better. They show why a brand team needs repeated prompt testing across engines, runner needs, and time. One screenshot cannot represent the market.

Why do training, marathon, and fit questions need different proof?

The study’s demand clusters changed the leading set. A marathon query created one comparison group. A flat-feet query created another. A purchase-location query elevated a retailer instead of a shoe brand.

Demand cluster Leaders in the tested prompts

Marathon

ASICS and Nike reached 95.8%; Saucony reached 91.7%; New Balance reached 83.3%.

Flat feet

ASICS and Brooks reached 79.2%; New Balance, HOKA, and Saucony reached 70.8%.

Specific need

Altra reached 87%; New Balance, HOKA, and Topo Athletic reached 82.6%.

Where to buy

Fleet Feet reached 75% of the purchase-location prompt cluster.

A brand strategy built around total mentions can miss the prompt that matters to the product line. Model-level evidence should follow training use, runner need, and retail availability.

What do real product pages contribute to the comparison?

Brooks positions the Adrenaline GTS 24 for road running and walking, lists GuideRails support, a 12 mm drop, and a weight of 10 ounces. New Balance describes the Fresh Foam X 1080v14 for everyday runs, walking, and long runs, with a neutral support classification, a 6 mm drop, and a listed weight of 298 grams.

Those details make two different use cases searchable. The Nike Vaporfly 4 supports a race-day comparison. ASICS GEL-KAYANO 32 can support a stability comparison. Product copy should state the intended use, model version, specifications, fit options, evidence, and limitations without implying that one feature will prevent injury or work for every runner.

What do creators, social media, and specialty stores add?

Creators can make the use case visible. A YouTube review can compare the Adrenaline GTS 24 and GEL-KAYANO 32 during steady miles. A TikTok series can document outsole wear across 100 miles. An Instagram Reel can show how the 1080v14 fits during a long run. A race-day video can show how Vaporfly 4s are used differently than in daily training.

Specialty retail adds fit and service. Fleet Feet’s fit process combines a conversation, foot scan, and try-on experience. That store interaction can resolve questions about width, heel hold, support preference, and stock that a short AI answer cannot settle.

Influencer disclosures must be clear, and performance statements need support. Runner experience can provide context, but it cannot prove injury prevention, medical benefit, or universal suitability.

Where does the running shoe shortlist fail before purchase?

Handoff Common break Signal to track

Publisher to AI

The comparison omits the tested workout, fit, or model version.

Citation source, prompt coverage, message accuracy

AI to brand

The model appears, but the product page does not confirm the use case.

Owned citation rate, specification views, qualified visits

Brand to creator

A feature becomes an unsupported performance or injury claim.

Disclosure rate, claim corrections, comment quality

Creator to retailer

The linked width, size, color, or model version is unavailable.

Referral traffic, in-stock rate, page exits

Retailer to runner

Fit, comfort, or use removes the model from the short list.

Returns, exchanges, and review topics

How can 5W help running shoe brands turn visibility into qualified consideration?

5W can audit the running questions that shape daily training, stability, wide fit, marathon preparation, race day, price, and purchase location. The work can compare brand and model appearance, citation sources, description accuracy, recommendations, retail availability, social conversation, and creator coverage across discovery channels.

5W can connect sports PR, digital marketing, social media, influencer programs, product content, retail communications, and GEO around one verified model record. The program can give publishers useful category evidence, give creators precise demonstration briefs, give social teams clear answers, and give retailers consistent product data.

Measurement can separate appearance, citation, recommendation, qualified traffic, fitting appointments, retailer actions, returns, and sales. No stage guarantees the next. The 5W Entertainment and Sports practice, social media marketing team, influencer marketing team, and GEO practice can manage those handoffs.

The running shoe shortlist must preserve the runner’s need

Running shoe discovery begins before a runner enters a store or starts a test mile. AI answers, reviews, brand pages, creator content, social media, and retailers each narrow the set. The shortlist loses value when those sources describe different workouts, model versions, fits, or claims.

5W’s study shows a large gap between brand appearance and owned evidence. ASICS can lead visibility while RunRepeat supplies much of the retrieved support. A coordinated 5W program can help a footwear company strengthen the verified model record and carry it through PR, digital marketing, social media, influencer content, retail, and AI discovery.

The goal is not a guaranteed sale or recommendation. The goal is a more accurate path from runner question to qualified consideration.
