For the first time, bots generate more web traffic than human users, and AI agents are driving the surge. Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince announced on X on June 3, 2026, that bots have passed human traffic online for the first time. Cloudflare Radar currently shows bots at about 57% of web page traffic, with the rest from human users.
The measure covers bots versus human requests for web pages on Cloudflare’s network, not all internet activity, and Prince said the exact crossover date is hard to pin down.

Prince had initially predicted that agentic bot traffic would surpass human traffic by the end of 2027. It happened 18 months early. The shift isn’t Cloudflare’s alone. HUMAN Security’s 2026 State of AI Traffic report, based on more than 1 quadrillion interactions, found automated traffic grew roughly eight times faster than human traffic throughout 2025, with traffic from AI agents and agentic browsers up nearly 8,000%.
Why marketers should pay attention
Target audiences now include AI agents acting on behalf of humans. Treating agentic visibility as “just SEO” means losing out on a growing audience.
Those agents don’t generate pageviews, bounce rates, or the other metrics search marketers have traditionally relied on. Marketers will need to track new indicators (citation rate, share of voice in AI answers, and referral traffic from AI platforms) to understand whether their optimization efforts are translating into visibility and business outcomes.
This milestone is also a useful internal case: Marketers can point to it when making the case for further investment in AI search and agentic optimization.
How to optimize for both human users and AI agents
Now that bots generate more web traffic than humans, marketers need to ensure their sites are accessible to bots, not just human users. Semrush One gives marketers the unified view they need to optimize for humans and AI in one place.

Use the AI Visibility Toolkit to monitor which prompts and queries trigger AI-generated answers that cite or mention your brand, and to see which URLs get cited along with citation counts by platform.

Use Site Audit to detect whether you’re unintentionally blocking AI crawlers, which limits your AI visibility before any other optimization can take effect.

For enterprise teams managing thousands of pages, Semrush Enterprise AI Optimization (AIO) goes deeper. Site Intelligence provides full JavaScript rendering, plus Crawler Profiles that simulate how specific crawlers like ChatGPT and Googlebot access and interpret your pages, along with Bot Analytics for crawl health across major bots.
