How a brand-new role took over content marketing [Study]

In 2026, companies are hiring content marketers who can own visibility in search, navigate AI-powered discovery, and prove that every piece of content is generating business results.

Meet the Content SEO Manager. This role did not show up in our 2023 research. Now, it accounts for 20% of all content marketing listings in the US, tying Content Creator as the highest-volume title in the market.

It was the standout finding of our broader study of 8,000 content marketing job listings earlier this year. So we decided to look at it on its own — analyzing 1,002 Content SEO Manager listings for skills, responsibilities, AI expectations, and work arrangements.

Methodology

We analyzed 1,002 Content SEO Manager job listings from Indeed.com (US) as of April 2026 and compared our findings with insights from our previous job market study.

We deduplicated overlapping postings and categorized roles into two groups:

  • Senior Positions (including Head, Director, VP, Chief, Lead, and Executive titles): 281 listings
  • Other Positions: 721 listings

For each listing, we extracted insights like required skills, salary data, and more.

Key findings

  • The Content SEO Manager is a newly emerged role: It did not appear in our 2023 data and now accounts for 20% of all content marketing listings, tying Content Creator at the top.
  • SEO is required in 62% of senior listings and 59% of non-senior listings, far exceeding the broader content marketing market average of 20% for senior roles and 28% for non-senior roles.
  • Analytics appears in 49% of senior listings and 40% of non-senior listings, making it the second most-requested marketing skill for Content SEO Managers.
  • 43% of senior Content SEO Manager listings mention AI, with 11% specifically requiring knowledge of AI Search, SGE, or AEO. The 11% figure is more than five times the rate seen in the broader senior content marketing market.
  • Workflow automation is listed as a core senior responsibility in 32% of listings.
  • 58% of senior Content SEO Manager roles are advertised as remote, nearly double the 31% rate for senior content marketing roles overall.

1. A brand-new title now leads the market

Content marketing roles in 2026 are clustering at two extremes: execution-heavy creators and senior performance owners. The Content SEO Manager sits squarely in the middle, combining both.

Three years ago, it did not appear in our tracked title categories at all.

By the end of 2025, the role accounted for 20% of all content marketing listings, tying Content Creator.

It is a new kind of job built around the convergence of content production, organic search, and AI-driven discovery. Companies need someone who can connect the dots and create content that brings in AI visibility, traffic, customers, and leads.

2. Project management and cross-team collaboration lead the top required skills

The soft skills profile for the Content SEO Manager is consistent across both seniority levels. Project management, collaboration, and communication are the defining non-degree requirements.

Top requirements for Content SEO Managers
  • Project management is the top non-degree skill at both levels, appearing in 20% of senior and 24% of non-senior listings. This is a role that manages a content/organic growth function.
  • A master’s degree is preferred in 61% of senior and 58% of non-senior listings. The qualification bar is consistently high for a content-adjacent role.
  • Content strategy and editorial planning appears in 14% of senior listings, confirming that editorial ownership stays part of the senior job alongside performance management. SEO/Organic growth strategy shows up in 5% of senior and 4% of non-senior listings.

3. Storytelling has overtaken writing as a senior requirement

The marketing skills profile for Content SEO Managers shows that this role has moved beyond content production, especially at the senior level.

SEO and analytics dominate as the top marketing skills across both groups.

What’s even more curious: Storytelling outranks writing by more than two to one for senior listings.

Marketing skills of Content SEO Managers
  • SEO and analytics are the top two marketing skills at both levels. The Content SEO Managee role is fundamentally a performance and search discipline.
  • Storytelling outranks writing at the senior level: Storytelling appears in 23% of senior listings, writing in just 10%. At the non-senior level, the order reverses: Writing (20%) outranks storytelling (12%). Senior hires are expected to shape narrative strategically.
  • LLM-powered content creation is emerging as a required marketing skill, appearing in 9% of senior and 5% of non-senior listings. Companies expect integration of AI into real content workflows, not just familiarity with the tools.
  • Content strategy appears at both levels (13% senior, 11% non-senior), confirming that strategic content ownership is not limited to the most senior hires

4. SEO leads the tech skills; senior roles lean conversion, non-senior roles lean publishing and front-end

SEO is required in over 59% of listings at both levels. Beyond that, the tech skills profile diverges: Senior roles also prioritize conversion optimization and analytics, while non-senior roles add publishing platforms and front-end skills.

Top tech skills of Content SEO Managers
  • SEO is the one constant across both levels, required in 62% of senior and 59% of non-senior listings
  • Conversion optimization is the clearest senior-level differentiator: It appears in 18% of senior listings and just 7% of non-senior listings, reflecting the expectation that senior hires connect content to business outcomes
  • Non-senior listings lean toward publishing and front-end skills: WordPress (12%), HTML (9%), CSS (8%), and content optimization (11%) are all more prevalent at non-senior level, reflecting hands-on content production and on-page work
  • Keyword research appears equally at both levels (12%), confirming it stays a core skill throughout the role rather than phasing out at senior level

5. The Content SEO Manager role owns the full content loop, with performance measurement at the top

The responsibilities in Content SEO Manager listings span the full lifecycle of content, from keyword research and content production through to performance tracking and workflow automation.

Data analysis ranks first at both levels, and editing, execution, and SEO execution are all present throughout.

Top responsibilities of Content SEO Managers
  • Data analysis is the top responsibility at both levels: 49% for senior, 41% for non-senior. The role is built around performance measurement.
  • Content editing and production remain core to the non-senior role: Editing and proofreading appear in 18% of non-senior listings. At the senior level, it drops to 7%, where oversight replaces direct execution.
  • Automation defines what separates senior from non-senior: Automating content workflows appears in 32% of senior listings compared to 12% for non-senior. Senior hires are expected to build and manage the systems, not just use them.
  • KPI ownership is a senior-only responsibility: Setting KPIs and growth goals appears in 11% of senior listings and under 1% of non-senior listings
  • AI tool usage is already a stated responsibility at both levels: 9% senior, 8% non-senior. This is in the job description, not aspirational language.

6. The role is largely defined by AI literacy

In our broader content marketing study, 34% of senior listings mentioned AI. For the Content SEO Manager, that number is 43%.

More significantly, 11% of senior listings specifically require knowledge of AI Search, SGE, or AEO, compared to 2% in the overall senior content market.

AI skills of Content SEO Managers
  • 43% of senior Content SEO Manager listings mention AI, compared to 17% for non-senior. The expectation is concentrated at leadership level.
  • AI Search fluency is what sets this role apart from the broader market: SGE, AEO, and AI Search requirements appear in 11% of senior listings, more than 5 times the broader content market rate of 2%
  • Prompt engineering is not yet a mainstream expectation, appearing in around 1% of senior listings and under 1% for others. The bar is practical AI fluency, not technical specialization.
  • The Content SEO Manager is the content role most explicitly built for AI-powered search. No other title in our research shows this level of AI Search specificity.

7. Marketing background, high degree requirements, and technical skills on the rise

Marketing is the most commonly specified degree field at both levels, followed by communication and business. Journalism, a traditional pathway into content roles, ranks near the bottom.

At the senior level, technical backgrounds are beginning to appear, reflecting the analytical and automation demands of the role.

Degree requirements for Content SEO Managers
  • Marketing is the top specified degree field at both levels, more commonly listed at non-senior level (18%) than senior (10%)
  • Journalism ranks near the bottom: 1.5% for senior, 3% for non-senior. Traditional editorial backgrounds are not a primary pathway into this role.
  • Technical backgrounds are emerging at the senior level: Computer science (2.5%), engineering (2%), and technical fields (2%) together represent about 6% of senior listings, a meaningful signal given the analytical and workflow automation expectations of the role
  • A master’s degree is preferred in 61% of senior and 58% of non-senior listings. Field of study matters less than the level of qualification.

What this data tells us about the future of content

The Content SEO Manager emerged because the job of getting content found became more complex than ever.

It brings together what used to require a content strategist, an SEO specialist, a data analyst, and increasingly an AI search expert, into a single function with clear performance accountability.

What the data reflects is not just a new title. It is a redefinition of content as a discipline: data-first, search-native, built for AI-powered discovery, and measured against business outcomes.

For anyone building toward this role, the data points to a clear profile:

  • Build SEO and organic growth fluency beyond keyword research: Companies are increasingly looking for knowledge of SEO, conversion optimization, and AI Search
  • Treat workflow automation as a core skill: 32% of senior listings list it as a stated responsibility
  • Show how your work drives measurable outcomes: KPIs, organic growth goals, and performance tracking appear throughout senior listings
  • Position storytelling as a strategic skill: Narrative expertise now outranks writing as a senior requirement
  • Be explicit about your AI experience: AI appears in 43% of senior listings. Practical AI fluency in content and SEO workflows is already expected.

Semrush helps you prepare for this reality. It combines AI-powered tools for search rankings, AI visibility, content generation, and competitive intelligence with actionable insights and guidance to help you move faster.
