Recommendation Strategist – Insider One

Your Product Recommendation Strategy Starts With a Conversation

Ecommerce teams are under constant pressure to deliver more relevant customer experiences, improve product discovery, and increase the performance of every digital touchpoint. The stakes are real: according to McKinsey, personalization most often drives a 10 to 15 percent revenue lift, and companies that excel at it generate 40 percent more revenue from those efforts than average performers. Product recommendations sit at the center of that opportunity, but creating and maintaining recommendation strategies often requires teams to understand algorithms, filters, exclusions, page types, and configuration logic before they can get to the outcome they actually want.

That creates friction for marketing and CRM teams who regularly manage recommendation campaigns. It can also limit discovery: teams may only use the recommendation capabilities they already know, instead of exploring more advanced algorithms, filters, and exclusions that could support better customer experiences.

Our Recommendation Strategist changes that.

Tell the Recommendation Strategist what you’re trying to achieve and it turns your words into a working product recommendation strategy

Meet the Recommendation Strategist

With Insider One’s Recommendation Strategist, teams can describe what they want to achieve in natural language and let the strategist help create, configure, and refine the recommendation strategy.

Our Recommendation Strategist offers teams a new way to create product recommendation strategies within Smart Recommender. Instead of configuring a strategy field by field, you describe what you want to achieve in your own words, and the system builds the strategy for you.

It introduces two new entry points into the strategy creation flow, sitting alongside the existing manual configuration you already use:

i. Chat with the Recommendation Strategist

A free-form, natural language chat where you describe the strategy you want. Type something like “Increase average basket size on my cart page. Show 6 items from Tops & Shirts only, and exclude anything they’ve already added to their cart,” and you get a complete, configured strategy in a single turn. No menus, no setup sequence.

ii. Goal-Based Strategy Creation

Predefined campaign goals that generate an instant strategy configuration. Select an objective such as “Maximize Cart Value,” and Smart Recommender produces a ready-to-use recommendation strategy on the cart page in seconds, which you can then refine through chat.

How the Recommendation Strategist works

Behind both entry points is a system that maps natural language to the right algorithm and filter configuration.

Recommendation Strategist does more than transcribe a request into settings. It holds a multi-turn conversation, asking clarifying questions when your intent could be interpreted more than one way, detecting conflicts in the configuration, and validating filters against your actual catalog so the strategy it builds can run on your real data.

Transparency with ‘Show Reasons’

Automation only helps if you can trust it. The ‘Show Reasons’ feature gives you visibility into why the strategist made each recommendation, so you stay in control of the output rather than handing it over.

Refine, reset, and give feedback

Strategy creation is iterative. You can refine the algorithm, filters, and exclusions across multiple messages in a single session, reset the strategy and chat to start over, and leave like or dislike feedback with comments on every proposal. Strategies are also given auto-generated names, and editing an existing strategy is supported through the same chat experience.

What Recommendation Strategist changes for your team

The Recommendation Strategist is designed around outcomes, not features:

Less effort to create strategies: Describe what you want instead of navigating configuration screens one step at a time.

Discover capabilities you didn’t know existed: The strategist surfaces relevant algorithms, filters, and exclusions through conversation, so the strategy isn’t capped by your familiarity with the tool.

A faster path to a working strategy: Goal-based templates give you a ready-to-use starting point in seconds, then let you refine from there.

Who is Insider One’s Recommendation Strategist for

Users can begin with a goal, generate a strategy, review the reasoning, refine the output, and continue adjusting the setup through natural language.

The Recommendation Strategist is equally valuable for teams newer to Smart Recommender. Because it surfaces what’s possible through conversation, you don’t need deep product expertise upfront to build a capable strategy.

The capability works across verticals – fashion, electronics, furniture, pets, jewellery, gardening, publishing, and beyond – anywhere product recommendations shape the customer experience.

Smart Recommender includes advanced capabilities such as dynamic filters, exclusions, and algorithm options. But teams that are new to Smart Recommender may not always know which capabilities are available or when to use them.

The Recommendation Strategist helps surface relevant algorithms, filters, and exclusions through conversation. This can help users discover capabilities they may not have explored through manual configuration alone.

Insider One is among the first to let users create, configure, and refine recommendation strategies through natural language, in their own words and their own language – with algorithm selection, filter mapping, catalog validation, and conflict detection handled automatically.

Getting started with the Recommendation Strategist

The Recommendation Strategist is available to all Smart Recommender customers.

This lives inside the strategy creation flow you already use, there’s nothing new to learn before you start. The conversational and goal-based entry points sit right alongside manual configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Recommendation Strategist?

It’s a new way to create recommendation strategies in Insider One’s Smart Recommender, where you describe your goal in natural language and the system builds the strategy for you, through either free-form chat or goal-based templates.

Do I still have control over the strategy?

Yes. The ‘Show Reasons’ feature explains why each recommendation was made, you can refine every element across the conversation, and manual configuration remains fully available.

Does it work with my product catalog?

Yes. The Recommendation Strategist validates filters against your actual catalog so the strategies it builds can run on your real data, and it detects configuration conflicts before launch.

Who can use the Recommendation Strategist?

It’s available to Smart Recommender customers using Insider One.

Does the Recommendation Strategist analyze my campaign performance or customer data to suggest new strategies?

No. The Recommendation Strategist focuses on helping you build, configure, and refine recommendation strategies, like selecting algorithms, setting filters, and validating against your catalog. It doesn’t have access to campaign analytics or customer segment data, so suggestions are based on what you describe, not live performance data.
