How do you optimize for AI search?

You can optimize for AI search by making sure your website is accessible to AI crawlers, creating high-quality content, and establishing authority in your space.

AI search platforms like Google’s AI Mode, ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, and Gemini pull information from content they deem trustworthy and helpful. Your goal is to become the go-to source that AI naturally turns to when answering questions in your industry.

A lot of the same strategies that work for traditional SEO also apply when optimizing for AI search. Here’s how to optimize your content for AI search:

  • Make sure there are no technical issues. Ensure that AI crawlers can access your website by checking your robots.txt file and ensuring important pages aren’t blocked or hidden behind paywalls or login walls.
  • Structure content for AI parsing. Use clear headings, bullet points, numbered steps, and FAQ formats that help AI systems quickly locate and reference specific information from your pages
  • Cover related questions and subtopics. Create comprehensive content that addresses not just the main topic but also related questions users might ask.
  • Demonstrate strong E-E-A-T signals. Include detailed author bios with credentials, link to authoritative sources, showcase first-hand experiences with the topic to show AI systems your information is trustworthy
  • Add schema markup. Implement relevant schema markup (e.g., FAQ, HowTo, Article, and Organization schema) to give AI more information about the page’s content so it can better understand context and determine when your content is the best match for specific queries.
  • Include original data and stats. Add first-party statistics to your articles to make your content more likely to be cited by AI systems.
  • Keep content fresh. Regularly update your content with the latest information, as AI systems prioritize fresh content when asnwering user questions.

For example, if you want your article about email marketing to appear when someone asks ChatGPT or Google’s AI Overview, “What’s the average email open rate for SaaS businesses?,” you’d need to make sure your content includes the latest SaaS open-rate benchmarks. And a subheading like “What’s the average email open rate for SaaS?” so AI can easily extract the answer.

Semrush’s Enterprise AIO and AI SEO Toolkit help you track which of your content gets cited in AI-generated responses and monitor your share of AI visibility compared to competitors. This is incredibly important because AI search is rapidly growing and becoming a primary way users discover information, making it essential to optimize for these platforms to maintain visibility and traffic.
