This summer, thousands of students around the world are completing their Google internships. When asked why they chose Google for their internship, they cited a range of reasons from developing their skills in a high performing environment to the idea of working with some of the most innovative leaders in AI. Across the board, the biggest reason was the chance to do real work on meaningful projects, and contribute to improving tools and technologies used by billions worldwide.
To celebrate International Intern Day 2025, I spoke with three Google interns — all working with artificial intelligence or machine learning — to better understand their projects. Here’s what they had to say:
Lalit Mohanani: Software engineering intern | Pune, India
“Google’s been my dream; I wanted to work on projects with massive, positive impact, defining new industry standards. As an intern, I’m now enhancing AI communication security. My project allows clients to cryptographically verify an AI server runs correct, unmodified code in a confidential environment before data exchange and ensure end-to-end privacy and security of their data in a zero-trust environment. This work could increase AI adoption in security-critical industries like finance and healthcare. For me, it’s incredibly meaningful: a practical solution enabling safe AI for critical applications.”
HyoJung Han: Research intern on Google Translate | Mountain View, USA
“This summer, I’m working on improving how multilingual large language models (LLMs) handle cultural nuance and complexity within Translate. A known challenge with LLMs is that while they’re great at generalizing universal knowledge, they could inadvertently undermine the nuances of different cultures, views and information. To address this, my project involves developing a more holistic framework to detect unintended instances of the dilution of or misrepresentation of cultural context. Based on this understanding, we can develop methods to teach LLMs how to share universal knowledge when appropriate, while we also preserve the nuances and perspectives that make each culture unique.”
Jonathan Shamwana: Associate product management intern, YouTube ads | Mountain View, USA
“I was drawn to Google because it empowers engineers, artists and creators. This summer on the YouTube Ads team, I’m experimenting with the latest generative AI models across my projects. As a YouTube power user myself, helping build a better viewing experience is gratifying. My work also lays the groundwork for closer collaboration between YouTube and other product areas.”
