Nearly seven in ten searches now resolve without a visit to any website, according to 2026 industry analysis. For brands, visibility increasingly means being named or summarized inside an AI response. That changes what PR is worth to the business, because the sources AI systems cite are disproportionately journalistic.
The citation data. An analysis by Muck Rack in May 2026, covering 25 million AI citations, is reported to have found that 84 percent of what ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini cite comes from earned media. Other coverage reports that earned media placements outperform owned content by 325 percent for AI citation rates. These figures are circulating through secondary coverage, so confirm them against the original analysis before using them in a client or board deck.
What this does to measurement. Impressions and backlinks were the old currency. PR teams are starting to report on generative engine optimization metrics, such as how often a brand is cited and how well key messages carry into model outputs. Press clippings still count, but they are now one input into a larger question: does the brand appear when someone asks an AI system about its category?
Why this favors some PR work over others. If AI systems draw heavily on trusted outlets, then a placement in a respected trade publication may do more for AI visibility than a larger number of low-authority mentions. That is an inference from the citation data, not a proven rule, but it is a reasonable basis for choosing where to spend limited outreach effort.
A practical first step. Ask three or four AI assistants the questions a buyer in your category would ask, and record which sources they cite and whether your brand appears. Repeat monthly. It takes an afternoon to set up, and it gives a PR team a baseline that clipping reports cannot provide.
