The B2B marketing research points one direction and the budget data points another. One 2026 roundup puts the ideal B2B split near 46 percent brand and 54 percent performance. Gartner’s 2026 CMO survey, separately, found 54 percent of CMOs prioritizing performance marketing and only 22 percent prioritizing brand.
The timing problem. The compiled return figures explain why. Brand ROI at six months sits at 0.8x against 2.4x for performance. By three years the order flips, with 4.1x for brand and 1.9x for performance. A marketer measured on this quarter’s pipeline is rationally choosing the option that looks better at six months, even when it looks worse at three years. These figures come from a statistics roundup and not a primary study, so read them as the shape of the curve, not a precise forecast.
What performance-only budgets run into. The same roundup reports that 58 percent of brands relying only on performance see declining marginal returns after two years. That fits a familiar pattern: the in-market audience gets harvested efficiently, and then growth stalls because nothing was done to build the next in-market audience.
Why B2B makes this sharper. Buying groups tend to settle on a shortlist before first contact, a pattern covered in our earlier piece on AI and buying groups. Brand work is what decides whether a company is on that list when a purchase begins. Strong brands are also reported to grow about 2.5 times faster than weaker ones in the same sector, and 58 percent of B2B marketers say brand building improves customer retention.
A practical test. Ask what share of next quarter’s budget is protected from short-term pipeline targets. If the answer is none, the gap between research and practice described above is playing out in your own plan. Closing it does not require flipping to 46 percent brand overnight. It requires a ring-fenced portion with a measurement horizon longer than a quarter.
