Clandestine’s Insider Tips for New Orleans

[ad_1]

Jazz Fest is just around the corner, and we are ready to fest our hearts out!

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned fest-goer, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival offers an unforgettable mix of local legends, big-name headliners, and soulful surprises. Want someone to plan your entire Jazz Fest experience with insider access, restaurant reservations, and custom itineraries? Email or call us — we’ll build something completely personalized.

But if you’re here for expert tips to do Jazz Fest right — read on…

Gear Up: What to Bring to Jazz Fest

Rain gear is non-negotiable.

April and May in New Orleans are notoriously rainy, and the Fairgrounds can turn muddy fast. Bring rain boots — and a pair of flip flops in your bag. That way, you can switch it up when the sun’s out and your feet need a breather.

Pro Tip: If you forget boots, hit up a local Walmart or corner store for shrimp boots (yes, really) — they’re cheap, effective, and kind of iconic.

Plan Your Day: Jazz Fest Schedule + Must-See Stages

Download the Jazz Fest app, but also hunt down the old-school “cubes” — printed schedules showing who’s playing when and where. OffBeat Magazine publishes pocket-sized versions every year and they’re a favorite among locals.

Our suggestion? Pick your “must-see” artists, but leave space to wander. Some of the best moments happen by accident. Here are a few of our favorites but honestly, every stage is fantastic.

  • Gentilly Stage always delivers diverse and high-energy sets.

  • Jazz & Heritage Stage showcases authentic New Orleans culture — brass bands, Mardi Gras Indians, and more.

  • Gospel Tent = pure joy.

Beat the Crowds: Arrive Early and Set Up Camp

Want a good spot near the stage? Get there early. The gates open at 11 a.m., and by mid-afternoon it’s packed. Early birds get:

Set up a base camp near your favorite stage, but be courteous — don’t leave your stuff unattended for hours. Take turns with your group and keep the vibes friendly.

Eat, Drink, Shop: Don’t Miss the Full Jazz Fest Experience

The food is next-level. Iconic vendors serve up everything from cochon de lait poboys to mango freeze. Don’t just grab something fast — plan a few foodie moments throughout the day.

Same goes for the crafts and artist vendors — they travel from all over and bring truly one-of-a-kind goods. You’ll want to leave room in your bag for a souvenir or two.

Group tip: Share the load. We often fest as a crew and split beer runs, water refills, and snack missions.

Stay Cool, Stay Safe

New Orleans sun does not play. Pack:

If you need shade and tunes, check out the Blues Tent, Gospel Tent, or Fais Do-Do Stage — they’re covered and full of soul.

Bathroom Strategy: Yes, We Have One

Not all port-a-potties are created equal. Look for the “People Pleasers” – those are the air-conditioned bathroom trailers. Especially useful if you’ve got kids or just want a break from the heat.

Bathroom Pro Tip: Don’t wait until right before a headliner to go. The lines closest to big-name acts (think: Stevie Wonder, Foo Fighters, etc.) get wild. Plan your breaks strategically.

A Final Word on Jazz Fest at the Fairgrounds Etiquette

If you’re heading to one of the headliner shows, don’t set up camp on the outer track just to sit through the set. It’s considered poor form. Make space for folks who really want to see the performance up close — and you’ll enjoy it more too.
