Organizations around the world are already harnessing AI to drive meaningful change and improve people’s lives. In the Asia-Pacific region — where we face challenges ranging from health inequities to extreme weather — the potential for AI to help solve problems is vast.

That’s why today we’re announcing the APAC AI for Society initiative — a $10 million Google.org commitment to help Asia Pacific social impact organizations develop transformative AI solutions to help their communities. This initiative will focus on three critical areas: agriculture, health and energy. Today we’re also sharing why we are focusing on these three areas — and how AI can help — and in the coming months we’ll be sharing more details about the first round of grant recipients.

Agriculture: growing a smarter future

Agriculture is vital to Asia Pacific, employing about 30% of the total population. But it’s also a sector facing big transitions, especially with climate change projected to reduce crop productivity by up to 50% in some areas by 2050.

This is where AI can help. AI can assist farmers with understanding landscapes and monitoring crops to boost their productivity and make smarter decisions about when and how to plant, water and fertilize. It could enable earlier detection of pests and diseases, stopping problems before they spread. Ultimately, AI can help build a more resilient and productive agricultural sector for the region and the world.

Health: enhancing care and access

The Asia-Pacific region faces significant health challenges. We see a high prevalence of chronic diseases, many underserved populations and a shortage of healthcare specialists, which often limits access to quality care.

AI can help with earlier detection of health issues, leading to quicker diagnoses and better patient outcomes. AI can also make healthcare operations more efficient, streamlining processes, supporting healthcare workers and getting people the care they need faster. Most importantly, AI has the potential to expand broader access to quality healthcare services, reaching communities that might otherwise be left behind.

Energy: building efficiency to support growth

Improving energy efficiency in Asia Pacific is crucial to harnessing the AI opportunity and sustaining economic growth while managing rising energy demand and emissions. AI innovations are already optimizing traffic lights to reduce vehicle emissions in cities, helping determine fuel-efficient routing and helping cities tackle extreme heat.

The APAC AI for Society initiative and Google’s ongoing work in this space reflects our belief that AI can be a powerful force for good. By empowering organizations, we’re helping to create a more sustainable, healthier and more resilient future for communities across the Asia-Pacific region.
