An Employer Brand Consultant’s Diary – Decoding Human-Centered Culture from the Inside Out

Why Employer Brand Consulting Requires Curiosity and Immersion

Thomas: I’m French, and maybe that’s why my journey into employer branding started at an early age, when I read Marcel Proust. Proust captured the essence of human experience.

It took him 14 years to carefully weave together layers of emotions, conversations, and observations—constructing his masterpiece like a finely woven Chanel fabric, each thread placed with precision. His process wasn’t about rushing to a conclusion; it was about deep immersion, relentless curiosity, and honoring every detail.

And the more I reflect, the more I realize: this is exactly how we approach employer branding at Blu Ivy. We don’t create culture from a desk.

We go in. We listen. We experience.

Fanta: Like Thomas, I’ve always had a deep appreciation for people. Even as an introvert, I’m endlessly fascinated by how we think, connect, and experience emotions. It’s what inspires me to do this work.

Reading Malcolm Gladwell’s The Tipping Point brought clarity to something I’ve always believed – we don’t exist in isolation. Our interactions shape the world around us. When ideas and behaviors resonate, they can gather momentum and reach a “tipping point,” sparking meaningful social and cultural change. It’s a powerful reminder of the impact we have on one another.

We’re Humans. Not AI.

We keep hearing AI in conversations about work today: it’s tech, AI, automation—as if culture, belonging, and human connection could somehow be coded into an algorithm. Technology can optimize processes, AI won’t replace humans—it will augment us, and it can’t replace what makes a company truly great: its people.

That’s why last week, we packed our bags and set off—one from Vancouver, the other from Montreal—for Texas and New Jersey to visit our amazing client. Because no amount of data, no dashboard, and certainly no AI model can replace walking the halls, shaking hands, sitting down for real conversations, and truly experiencing the culture firsthand.

Culture Consulting: The Power of Being There

How do we decode something as intangible as culture?

Culture isn’t crafted in meetings; it’s shaped in break rooms, on factory floors, and in the honest conversations between colleagues.

We landed in Texas before sunrise, juggling time zones, airport coffees, and last-minute notes before heading straight to our first site visit. The moment we stepped onto the production floor, it was clear: this wasn’t something we could ever truly understand from a PowerPoint deck or a handbook.

Here, culture wasn’t just a set of values printed on a wall, it was the way teams worked together, the way leadership showed up, and the way employees spoke about their work, not as a job, but as something they owned and were proud of.

We didn’t show up with a checklist. We came in with curiosity. We’re cultural anthropologists and that’s what sets us apart: our job isn’t to force or apply a framework, it’s to take it all in by observing with our eyes, listening to the diverse voices, and absorbing the energy in the room to uncover the real story.

What we learned that day could not have been uncovered in their handbook. We needed to experience what their people did every day.

Human-Centered Culture in Action

Then came New Jersey. We sat down for coffees, listened, and captured the language employees use to describe their every day. Learned from leaders who want to build an amazing culture.

Our job is to uncover the narrative. To connect the dots between leadership’s vision and employees’ experiences.

Real culture happens in between meetings, in casual hallway conversations, in the little moments where employees either feel valued or invisible.

The Magic of Collaboration

The real magic of our team comes in the moments in between:

  • Airport lounges, where we rapidly synthesized insights before our next flight.
  • Late-night debriefs in hotel lobbies, comparing observations and challenging each other’s assumptions (often in Frenglish).
  • Rental car conversations, turning casual reflections into strategic insights (and sometimes missing a turn…)

This is what makes our work different. We don’t follow a playbook—we evolve with every client. We never create the same EVP, because each of them has a unique DNA.

The Blu Ivy Approach to Employer Brand Consulting

  • We FULLY immerse ourselves in the culture for days and listen to employees at every level.
  • We remain vulnerable because we don’t assume; we let the truth reveal itself.
  • We don’t impose beliefs, we let the organization’s language guide the process.
  • We focus on the journey, because culture is a lived experience.

Culture Is Felt, Not Defined

As we boarded our final flights home, we reflected on the week.

EVPs aren’t built in strategy sessions or curated by AI, they emerge from real conversations, in the everyday experiences that shape how people feel about their jobs.

Like Proust’s woven narratives, the strongest employer brands don’t come from a single idea, they come from layers of human experience, carefully stitched together to reflect the truth.

And just like the “Tipping Point”, we work to ensure that the EVP is a positive catalyst within each organization that we work with, unifying them through clarity, enhancing employee engagement, driving behavioral shifts, attracting and retaining talent, and fueling innovation and growth.

Most companies talk about being human-centered. At Blu Ivy, we prove it because that’s our « raison d’être », that’s what we do. We decode, weave, and activate culture.
