How do you use competitive intelligence in marketing?

You use competitive intelligence in marketing by systematically gathering and analyzing data about your competitors’ strategies, performance, and market positioning to identify opportunities, refine your own tactics, and gain strategic advantages in your industry.

Competitive intelligence helps you make informed marketing decisions based on real market data rather than assumptions. Here’s how to effectively implement competitive intelligence in your marketing strategy:

  • Analyze competitor content strategies. Study what topics your competitors cover, which content formats they use, and how frequently they publish to find out what works in your market.
  • Monitor competitor SEO performance. Track their keyword rankings, backlink profiles, and organic traffic trends to understand where they currently stand and find new backlinks and keyword opportunities.
  • Research competitor pricing and positioning. Understand how competitors price their products, what value propositions they emphasize, and how they differentiate themselves to refine your own positioning strategy.
  • Track competitor social media and advertising. Monitor their social media posts, ad copies, and targeting strategies to identify successful tactics you can adapt for your brand.
  • Study competitor customer feedback and reviews. Analyze customer reviews and complains about competitor products to improve messaging of your own brand
  • Identify competitor weaknesses and gaps. Look for areas where competitors aren’t serving customers well or markets they’re not addressing, creating opportunities for your business.

Semrush’s Traffic & Market toolkit lets you analyze where your competitors stand in your market and which marketing channels drive growth so you can uncover strategic insights for your own business.
