Postage Rose Again in July. Text Messaging Got More Expensive a Different Way.

The U.S. Postal Service raised rates again on July 12, 2026, pushing the Forever stamp from 78 cents to 82 cents and lifting most Marketing Mail letters and flats by roughly 5 to 6.5 percent, according to Postalytics, a direct mail software vendor that tracks each rate filing. Amsive, a direct marketing agency, tallies the toll differently: five separate rate hikes since 2021 have compounded into a 34 percent jump in the price of a stamp. Direct marketers absorbed a rate freeze through the first half of 2026, and the bill for that pause came due in July.

Direct mail spending is going up anyway. Lob’s 2026 State of Direct Mail Report finds that about 90 percent of businesses increased direct mail investment this year, with direct mail now claiming roughly a quarter of marketing budgets at the companies Lob surveyed. The number marketers keep citing to justify that spending is a 161 percent return on investment for direct mail as a standalone channel, a figure that traces back to the ANA’s Response Rate Report from 2023, three years and five postage increases before this one. Nobody has published an updated version of that ROI math since the rate climbed 34 percent, so the margin it describes may already be smaller than the figure suggests.

Text messaging’s cost increase has nothing to do with postage. Carriers now charge per message under the A2P 10DLC system, and T-Mobile raised its rate to $0.0025 per SMS in January 2026. The bigger expense sits in compliance, not delivery. Carriers started blocking unregistered bulk text traffic outright in February 2025, with no grace period for campaigns that skip registration, and a patchwork of state laws now stacks on top of the federal TCPA: Texas SB 140 allows penalties up to $5,000 per violation, Florida’s FTSA sets $500 per violation with treble damages for willful cases, and Oklahoma caps daily messages at three per recipient. Zales Jewelers settled a 2025 case for $7.5 million over 5,000 unauthorized texts, roughly $1,500 a message, a ratio that makes a sloppy contact list far more expensive than any per-message carrier fee.

n

Both channels are pointing at the same fix. Lob reports that 74 percent of its highest-performing direct mail programs already use AI-assisted personalization rather than blanket mailing lists, and the same logic applies to text: a verified, consented contact list is what keeps an SMS program out of the $1,500-per-message bracket, not a bigger sending budget. In mail, the cost pressure comes from the postal rate table. In text, it comes from penalty exposure. Either way, the response that held up this year came from fewer, better-qualified contacts, not more volume.

n

What to check before the next send. Postalytics suggests buying Direct Mail Credits now, since they hold current pricing for 12 months regardless of the next rate filing. On the text side, confirm campaign registration status with the Campaign Registry and audit consent records against the state where each recipient lives, since Texas, Florida, Oklahoma, Washington, and Maryland now each set their own penalty schedule on top of the federal one. Neither fix is about finding a cheaper channel. Both are about not paying twice for the same list.
