Social listening metrics: The 7 that actually matter (and how to act on them)

Social listening is like putting your ear to the internet. But the goal isn’t just to listen.

By tracking the right social listening metrics, you can work out what all that conversation means (and what you should do with it).

Key takeaways

  1. Listening metrics track what people are saying online. It’s how you keep a pulse on conversations, audience sentiment, emerging topics, and more.
  2. Seven listening metrics matter most: Mention volume, sentiment, share of voice (SOV), reach, engagement rate, trend and topic volume, and conversation themes.
  3. Lumen by Hootsuite makes it easy to track listening metrics in real time. Track competitors, sentiment, trends, and more across 150+ million sources.

What are social listening metrics?

Social listening metrics measure online conversations to understand what people are saying about your brand, product, competitor, or industry. They include metrics like mention volume, sentiment, share of voice, reach, and more.

Do it better with Hootsuite, the all-in-one social media tool. Stay on top of things, grow, and beat the competition.

Social listening metrics vs. KPIs

A metric is just something you’re measuring. It only becomes a KPI once you’ve tied it to an actual goal.

Take share of voice. On its own, it’s just a number. But tie it to a goal — say, growing brand visibility — and suddenly it’s not just a metric anymore. It’s a KPI.

For example:

Metric When it becomes a KPI
Mention volume When your goal is to increase brand awareness
Share of voice When you want to outperform competitors in social media conversations
Sentiment When your goal is to improve brand perception

Why do social listening metrics matter?

Social listening metrics turn online chatter into something you can actually act on, whether that’s fixing your messaging, protecting your reputation, or getting ahead of a trend before it’s everywhere.

Here’s why listening metrics matter:

Understand audience perception

You can guess how customers feel about your brand, or you can actually find out. Social listening is how you do the second one.

Maybe there’s a feature people love that barely gets a mention in your marketing. Or maybe the same misconception keeps popping up in comments, practically begging to be addressed.

Social listening helps you catch those patterns before they turn into missed opportunities.

Protect your brand reputation

Bad news moves fast on social. Social listening gives you an early heads-up when something starts brewing.

Maybe negative sentiment is ticking up, or an unhappy customer review is getting shared far and wide. Catching it early buys you time to decide what to do next, whether that’s drafting a response or choosing to wait and watch.

Spot trends early

The best time to spot a trend is before every brand has an opinion on it. Social listening surfaces trending topics just as they pick up steam.

That’s your window to decide if the conversation’s actually a fit for your brand, and if it is, how you’ll jump on it while it still feels fresh.

Improve content and messaging

With social listening, you can track the exact words people use to describe your brand or product.

If customers keep calling your product “dynamic” but your marketing pushes “efficient,” that’s a mismatch worth fixing. And if a message keeps missing the mark, that’s good to know too.

Tom Bukevicius, CEO and Founder of Scube Marketing, has seen this play out firsthand.

“In one campaign, we noticed that people weren’t really questioning the product itself — they were confused about what made it different from cheaper alternatives,” he says. “We changed the campaign from feature-focused messaging to clearer comparison and positioning.”

It’s a good reminder: Sometimes the gap is in the messaging, not the product itself.

Power business decisions

Your customers talk a lot on social, and most of it never makes it into a feedback survey or support ticket. Social listening makes sure those comments don’t go to waste.

Say customers won’t stop raving about one feature. That’s a gift for your product team. Or, a competitor changes its pricing and Reddit lights up with complaints. Your sales team can sharpen its talking points before they ever request a demo.

The point is, social listening isn’t just for your marketing team. It’s customer research your product, sales, and support teams can all put to use.

What are the most important social listening metrics to track?

The seven most important social listening metrics are mention volume, sentiment, share of voice, reach, engagement rate, trend and topic volume, and conversation themes.

Here’s what each one actually tells you, and why it’s worth your attention.

1. Mention volume

Mention volume is the number of times your brand, product, or competitor is mentioned online.

Why it matters: A sudden jump or dip in mentions isn’t random. It could be good news — maybe your latest campaign took off and people can’t stop talking about it. Or it could be the opposite, like a negative review that’s taking on a life of its own.

Volume alone won’t tell you which, but it does tell you to go check.

2. Sentiment

Sentiment is the overall feeling behind online conversations about your brand, product, or competitor. Most listening tools sort it into positive, negative, or neutral.

Why it matters: Say your mention volume is up. Great, but is that actually a good thing? That’s where sentiment can help you understand the mood behind the numbers.

Use it to:

  • Track brand perception: By tracking sentiment over time, you can see if public perception is moving in the direction you want.
  • Gauge campaign response: Understand whether a campaign is generating excitement, indifference, or criticism.
  • Spot reputational risk: Catch a spike in negative sentiment before it snowballs.

3. Share of voice

Share of voice (SOV) measures how much of the conversation your brand owns compared to your competitors.

Why it matters: It shows you who’s getting the attention in your category. If your share is climbing, you’re becoming a bigger part of the conversation. If a competitor suddenly jumps ahead, dig into what they’re doing. It basically gives you a starting point for competitive analysis.

Pro tip 💡: Track SOV before, during, and after a campaign to see whether you actually shifted more of the conversation toward your brand.

4. Reach

Reach estimates how many people could potentially see conversations or mentions about your brand.

Why it matters: Not every mention has the same impact. A shoutout from an influencer with a large following travels a lot further than a handful of posts nobody engaged with.

Reach helps you understand the potential size of that audience. (Not to be confused with impressions, which count total views, including repeat ones from the same person.)

5. Engagement rate

Engagement rate measures how much people interact with content through actions such as likes, comments, shares, and saves.

Why it matters: High social media engagement is a signal that a specific topic or post is resonating, so you can double down on it in the future.

6. Trend and topic volume

Trend and topic volume tracks how often certain keywords, themes, or trends are being discussed.

Why it matters: Trends are more useful before every brand has posted about them. Watching topic volume can help you catch trends early on, giving you a window to jump in before you’re late to the party.

7. Conversation themes

Conversation themes are the recurring topics, questions, ideas, or complaints that show up in what people are saying.

Why it matters: This is where the actual context lives. Knowing mentions are up is one thing. Knowing why helps you plan your next steps.

How do you turn social listening metrics into action?

Social listening metrics are just the starting point. To turn them into action, you need to dig into the why behind them.

For example, say you spot a bump in negative sentiment. Go a layer deeper and see what’s behind the change. Maybe a campaign message missed the mark, or maybe you have a product issue on your hands.

As Bukevicius puts it, “The goal of social listening shouldn’t be to collect the biggest numbers, but to spot patterns early enough that marketing can respond before they become bigger opportunities or problems.”

Here’s a quick cheat sheet for turning your listening metrics into action:

Social listening metric What it tells you What you can do with it
Mention volume How much people are talking about your brand, product, campaign, or topic Dig into sudden spikes or dips. A jump could mean your campaign’s taking off, or that something’s gone wrong.
Sentiment Whether conversations are positive, negative, or neutral Find out what’s driving the mood. Double down on what people love or get ahead of complaints.
Share of voice How much of the conversation you own versus your competitors See which competitors are getting the attention and why. Then look for topics or conversations where your brand has room to take up more space.
Reach How many people could potentially see the conversation Gauge how far a conversation or campaign is spreading, and whether it’s worth amplifying or responding to.
Engagement rate How strongly people are interacting with relevant content Spot the messages and content that resonates
Trend and topic volume Which subjects are gaining or losing attention over time Catch a topic while it’s still picking up steam, then decide whether to jump in or just keep watching
Conversation themes What people keep talking about, asking for, or complaining about Turn recurring themes into content ideas, sharper messaging, better FAQs, or feedback for other teams

Spotting a trend is only half the job. The other half is figuring out what to actually do about it.

Wisdom, Hootsuite’s social-first AI, takes all that listening and performance data and helps you make sense of it. Just ask a question in plain language, like:

  • “Why did brand mentions spike this week?”
  • “What themes are showing up in negative customer sentiment?”
  • “Which competitor is gaining share of voice?”
  • “What should we post about based on this trend?”

From there, Wisdom can turn listening insights into next steps, whether that means suggesting a response strategy, or turning a trending topic into ready-to-review content.

FAQ: Social listening metrics

What are social listening metrics?

Social listening metrics are measurements that help you track and understand online conversations about your brand, products, competitors, or industry. They reveal how often people are talking about you, how they feel, and how you compare with competitors.

What’s the difference between social listening metrics and KPIs?

A metric is just something you’re measuring. A KPI is a metric you’ve decided actually matters for a specific goal. For example, mention volume is a metric. But mention volume tied to a brand awareness goal is a KPI.

Why should you track social media listening metrics?

Because your customers are already telling you what’s working. Social listening is how you make something of it, whether that’s market research, sentiment analysis, trend analysis, or competitor analysis. Track those signals over time and you can spot changes in brand health and customer satisfaction, catch trends while they’re still fresh, and make smarter decisions across the business.

How can social listening metrics help improve customer engagement?

Social listening metrics can show you what your audience actually wants to talk about. By tracking customer feedback and recurring questions, you can spot the topics people care about. Then, create more content around them (and keep an eye on your engagement metrics to see if it’s working).

It also means you show up at the right moment. Catch a spike in negative sentiment early enough, and your team can jump into the conversation before it snowballs. From there, tracking net sentiment over time tells you whether your efforts are actually landing.

How does Hootsuite report on social listening metrics?
